There is a lot of power in a name and I think to some extent we have lost the depth of meaning in the naming process for our children. Throughout the Bible and many cultures throughout the centuries, people were given names that had a very specific meaning for that person.
I have three children and my wife and I gave very careful consideration and prayer to the names we gave each of them. Each has a meaning that I believe will be significant in their lives and their walk with Jesus as he uses them in building his kingdom and they grow in their relationship with Him.
In the Bible, God sometimes changed a person’s name to reflect a new phase of life, or a different calling. Abram was changed to Abraham because God said he was going to make him the father of nations. Jesus changes Simon’s name to Peter which means “rock” because he said he was going to use Peter as a rock on which to build his church.
This song is all about the names of Jesus – in fact it’s mostly just a list of some of his names in the Bible. There are so many names and titles of Jesus that it could have been a much longer song, but I wanted to convey the multi-faceted nature of Jesus and how we respond when we begin to understand what some of these names mean. There aren’t enough words in the English language names to fully describe everything that he is (one of the challenges of song writing about him!) but the important this to grasp is that his name is above every other name. Philippians 2:9-11 says:
Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus name is so frequently used as an expletive that to some it may only ever be considered as a way to express anger or frustration, but those that use his name in this way are unaware that the very name that can be called up to save them, is being used as a swear word.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13
My prayer in writing and singing this song is that all who call upon the name Jesus may realise it’s power and significance in their lives, and come to know the saviour who’s name they use. There is power in the name of Jesus.
